The Vermont Economy

Moderate growth best characterizes the Vermont economy in 1995 and its prospects for 1996. For the first time in years, the state experienced a decided upturn in manufacturing jobs and saw an overall increase of about 2 percent in non-farm jobs.

Unemployment continued to run about one percent below the national and New England regional rates. In the largest population center in GMP's service territory--Chittenden County--the unemployment rate was more than 2 percentage points below the national rate.

With strong demand for computer chips from the IBM manufacturing facility in GMP's service territory and continued modest growth in other important sectors of the economy, the economic picture is solid.
